Camphor

Camphor is taken from the camphor tree.  These trees are native to China and Japan, although varieties of camphor can be found all over the world.  The oil extracted for the tree is the useful herb used in medicinal purposes.  Camphor has been used in a variety of ways throughout history. 

The many uses of camphor run the range.  Camphor was originally used as an embalming fluid in China as it preservative qualities are well known.  It is used in making varnish and as an additive for ink in the east.  It has also been used to add fragrance to soaps.  It's uses outside of China and Japan is mainly that of medicinal purposes.

The medicinal uses are just as varied as the non-medicinal uses.  Camphor has been used to ease problems with the digestive system.  It has been used as a treatment for cholera and colic.  It is used externally as a treatment for arthritis, sprains and bruises.  Camphor has been used to help relieve pain and as a good medicine to treat colds and respiratory ailments.  The main characteristics of camphor, medically speaking, are those of an antiseptic, antispasmodic and expectorant.

Camphor should be used wisely, though.  As mentioned it is known to be a good preserving and has been used as embalming fluid.  Taking too much camphor can be poisonous.  It should be used with extra care by those with heart problems or conditions.  Camphor is most often taken as an injection or can be given through a pill form. 

Camphor is often imported from China and Japan to other countries. The condition and value of some camphor is not the best.  Sometimes the oil is extracted too early and therefore the medicinally properties are not as good.  The oil can be thin and light to black and thick. It is important to buy from a trusted dealer.
